From the acclaimed popular historian Richard Snow, who? writes with verve and a keen eye? (The New York Times Book Review), comes a fresh and entertaining account of Henry Ford and his invention of the Model T?the ugly, cranky, invincible machine that defined twentieth-century America. Every century or so, our republic has been remade by a new technology: 170 years ago the railroad changed Americans? conception of space and time; in our era, the microprocessor revolutionized how humans communicate. But in the early twentieth century the agent of creative destruction was the gasoline engine, as put to work by an unknown and relentlessly industrious young man named Henry Ford. Born the same year as the battle of Gettysburg, Ford died two years after the atomic bombs fell, and his life personified the tremendous technological changes achieved in that span. Growing up as a Michigan farm boy with a bone-deep loathing of farming, Ford intuitively saw the advantages of internal combustion. Resourceful and fearless, he built his first gasoline engine out of scavenged industrial scraps. It was the size of a sewing machine. From there, scene by scene, Richard Snow vividly shows Ford using his innate mechanical abilities, hard work, and radical imagination as he transformed American industry. In many ways, of course, Ford?s story is well known; in many more ways, it is not. Richard Snow masterfully weaves together a fascinating narrative of Ford?s rise to fame through his greatest invention, the Model T. When Ford first unveiled this car, it took twelve and a half hours to build one. A little more than a decade later, it took exactly one minute. In making his car so quickly and so cheaply that his own workers could easily afford it, Ford created the cycle of consumerism that we still inhabit. Our country changed in a mere decade, and Ford became a national hero. But then he soured, and the benevolent side of his character went into an ever

Ivan Doig?s companion memoir to his bestselling This House of Sky?inspired by the letters his mother wrote during World War II?is? a lyrical evocation of the Doigs? gallantly hardscrabble existence and love for the unforgiving Montana mountains? (San Francisco Chronicle).Raised by his father and maternal grandmother, Ivan Doig grew up with only a vague memory of his mother, who died on his sixth birthday. Then he discovered a cache of her letters, and through them, a spunky, passionate, can-do woman emerged. His mother was as at home in the saddle as behind a sewing machine, and as in love with language as her son. In this prize-winning prequel to his acclaimed memoir This House of Sky, Doig brings to life his childhood before his mother?s death, and the family?s journey from the Montana mountains to the Arizona desert and back again. Profoundly original and lustrous,? (Kirkus Reviews) Doig eloquently captures the texture of the American West during and after World War II, the fortune of a family, and one woman?s indomitable spirit. Doig is? a colloquial stylist without equal?and Heart Earth is a book that repeatedly proves the power of language? (Los Angeles Times).

I have 2 sewing machines now and one serger. The Singer Izek has decorative stitches and such though don't use it much. The Kenmore is a trusty machine that I use a lot but if a bit too much to take to the sewing classes I am going to take this Spring. There are the uber pricey computerized machines that look really nice and have oodles of features but honestly I don't see myself using them a lot. This one looks sturdy (a tad heavy to take to class but I'm strong lol), has a wide harp area, thread cutter, in reviews people say it has a fantastic straight stitch (it only does straight stitch) and comes with walking feet and quilting feet. I pulled everything out of my studio this week so I could use our new steam cleany thing on the carpet. (Review: it pulled up a LOT of fur/thread/hair, but stains remain and the room smells like wet ferrets.) While putting everything back, I'm going through it all to reorganize and downsize. I made this purse in 2004, when I was getting the hang of my first sewing machine. It is the HAM BAG and though it is now useless (frayed flannel) I shall treasure it always.
